Hailing from the 20th century, the Bull Shot cocktail is making a come back.
Very retro, we’d say, it even made an appearance in “a Clockwork Orange” in 1971.
Described by Esquire as the Bloody Mary‘s salty cousin from Detroit, the Bull Shot is definitely putting the beef buzz back into the bar!
One would think a cocktail with a name as authentic as the “Bull Shot” would be on every bar menu in Jozi. It is not.
In fact, good luck even finding a bar with a stash of beef broth behind the counter!
A good bartender is, as they say, “is a pharmacist with limited inventory.”
In fact, many ingredients used in cocktail began their life as pseudo-medicinal tinctures, and some of them (like bitters in club soda for a tummy ache) do seem to have stood the test of time.
The Bull Shot is an excellent example of the restorative potential of a cocktail. Made with good bone broth, plenty of hot sauce, it makes a potent spirit-reviver in the coldest days of winter or the longest days of a nasty flu
